How Long Is A Treatment?

The first treatment will take at least one hour as a thorough consultation and intake will be conducted. Subsequent visits last between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the condition that the patient is being treated for.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

This depends on the duration, nature and severity of the complaint as well as the constitution of the patient. Someone may need only a single treatment for an acute condition whereas a series of 5 - 15 treatments may resolve chronic problems. Some degenerative conditions may require many treatments over time.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture should never be painful. If your practitioner has achieved the correct stimulus, some points may feel heavy, distended, tingly or there may be an electrical sensation around or radiating from the needle. Most patients find it very relaxing and may fall asleep during the treatment.

Are the Needles Clean?

All acupuncture needles used at The Shen Health and Wellness Centre are pre-sterilized, individually packaged, single use, disposable needles.

Are There Any Side-Effects?

Acupuncture has very few side-effects. On occasion, the needling may produce a small bruise or the needling sensation may remain after the treatment for a short while.

Patients may also feel slightly drowsy or dizzy after treatments but this feeling usually passes quickly. It helps to not have treatments on an empty stomach.

Cupping and Gua Sha may leave bruising following a treatment.
